AVALANCHE AWARENESS NIGHT
December 6, 2021, Monday, 7 – 9 pm, Doors open at 6:30 pm
Taylorview Middle School Auditorium, 350 Castlerock Lane, Idaho Falls
Following a year off due to Covid, the American Avalanche Institute, the Idaho Falls Ski Club, and Wray and Lani Landon will be presenting the 12th annual Avalanche Awareness Night. The presentation covers material that is important to anyone considering venturing into the winter backcountry. It also provides excellent refresher material for experienced backcountry users. Content includes:
- The fundamentals of snowpack, weather, and terrain
- Avalanche forecast bulletins
- Backcountry decision-making basics
- Current season snowpack overview
- Unique concerns for snowmobile users
This year we have invited Bill Radecky as our guest presenter. Bill Radecky is an avalanche educator and guide based in Rigby Idaho where he lives with his wife son Billy and their two dogs. He specializes in motorized avalanche classes, human powered Rec 1 and 2 classes. Bill has been a backcountry snowmobile guide based in Southwest Montana and Island Park for 11 seasons. Prior to transitioning into motorized access Bill was a lifelong skier, gaining backcountry experience in Colorado’s well-known Berthod and Loveland passes, and competing in Big Mountain Free skiing competitions. Bills avalanche education path started with classes taken from the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, and then with AAI becoming the first Snowmobile based guide in the US to obtain the Pro 2 certification. Bill is co-owner of Six Points Avalanche Education, guides for High Mountain Adventures, and is a career firefighter/paramedic for the city of Idaho Falls.
Doors will open at 6:30 pm. We suggest that you arrive by 6:45 pm since there will be several booths to visit in the lobby as well as a Banff film trailer showing in the auditorium. Raffle tickets and Kate’s bars will only be given out until 7:00 pm when the event begins. A wonderful assortment of door prizes will be given away following the presentations. This includes backcountry gear provided by Idaho Mountain Trading, Summit Eyecare, and Summit Orthopedics.
