Nordic ski grooming is currently being done by US Forest Service employees and volunteers using IFSC grooming equipment. Kelly resort grooms up to the “Y” (1 mile up FR 218). Beyond there (FR 217, 218, 881, and many loops), the grooming is done by the USFS and IFSC. There is a new Forest map showing all groomed trails posted at the start of FR 218 (by upper Kelly lift) and also at the Y. That map has been added to our website. If you just want to ski up FR 218 to the Morgan Summit area or beyond the Y to the KM hut, you can park in the lower parking area (immediately adjacent to the road) for $5/vehicle. If you want to access any of Kelly’s “Shred” trails, you can park in the main lot but need to pay $5/person at the ticket booth. Please sign the trail register at the Y so we can better serve the public!
If you have any questions or comments on Kelly trail grooming, please call Mike Abbott (208) 881-2088.
Dec 15 – Six snow machines used to pack trails – difficult day!
Dec 22 – First grooming
Dec 29 – Most trails groomed
Jan 12 – All trails groomed (see FS map posted at Y and on our website), Great conditions to the Y; rough conditions out FR 881 to KM hut; fast, rough conditions up to/down from Morgan Summit. Classic track set on loops.
Jan 19 – All trails groomed. Snowed all day, adding a couple inches to the track – still very nice! First pic shows Kelly resort grooming to Y and 0.5 miles up FR 881 to KM hut. Second pic shows track the rest of the way up to hut.
then FR 218 up to Morgan Summit and single track loop conditions…
Jan 26 – all trails groomed, including:
- FR 881 from Y to KM hut (ginzu + classic track)
- FR 217 from Y down to Hawley Gulch (snowmachine pack only)
- FR 218 from Y to Morgan Summit (packed + classic track)
- Tyro Loop (packed + classic track)
- Pine Loop (packed + classic)
- Hawley Gulch Overlook/Hidden Vista (packed + classic)
Feb 2 – all trails groomed (see above). Finally able to make multiple ginzu passes on both FR 881 (KM hut road) and FR 218 to Morgan Summit. Trails are in great shape! Skate-able if we don’t get too much snow in the next couple days.
Feb 9 – all trails groomed. Snowpack is thin up to the ski hill but is still very good above there.
Feb 16 – groomed. Pics below are the following day (Fri) after it snowed a little. Conditions are hard-packed w/ soft, corn surface during mid-day (not icy). Don’t bring your wax skis! Snow pack is still pretty deep above Kelly.
Feb 23 – everything groomed with the ginzu, including FR 218 all the way to the gate, FR 881 to the hut, FR 217 down to near Table Rock CG, and all loops. Conditions are really good – probably the best of the season! Snow pack is holding very well once you get above the resort.
Mar 2 – Ginzued out FR 881 to KM hut and down FR 217 – see below. Couldn’t get the ginzu up FR 218 because there has been 8-10″ of new snow above the Y, but set good classic tracks there and on all loops. Massive amounts of snow still up there!
Mar 9 – Ginzued FR 881 (out to KM hut), 217, and 218 (to Morgan Summit), and put classic tracks on the loops. This weekend should still be okay, but the snow pack is taking a real beating right now. This will likely be our last grooming!
Mar 15 – Yup, we are done. You can still ski up there for another week or so – all parking lots are mud pits, but the road is fully covered with hard packed spring snow. Thanks to Steve Evans (Master groomer) and our great Forest Service partners — Brad Higginson, Dave Woodcock, Spencer Johnston, and Kara Pankratz! See you next winter! — Mike Abbott
