March 15, 2017 update: All furnishing in the KM hut were removed today, and we are no longer taking reservations. The hut structure will be removed soon. Thanks for your support in making this a great hut year — 20 groups enjoyed overnights at the hut this winter!
The Idaho Falls Ski Club installs and maintains two warming huts east of Kelly Canyon Ski Area, both open to the public. The “Kelly Mountain” hut, located southeast of the “Y” on Kelly Logging road (Forest Road 881), is the larger of the two and available for overnight stays. The “Morgan Summit” hut, located at Morgan Summit on Forest Road 218, is a smaller warming hut. Both have wood stoves for heat, and firewood is provided. IFSC volunteers have worked hard to install and maintain these huts. Please help us keep them in good condition! The IF Ski Club Nordic Director in charge of these huts is Mike Abbott (208-881-2088).
12/15/2016 Update: the Morgan Summit collapsed recently due to heavy snow load. Because it is structurally damaged and frozen in, this hut will probably not be re-erected this winter.
The Kelly Mountain hut is located about 2.2 miles from the end of the road at Kelly Canyon Ski Area or 1.5 miles southeast of the “Y’ junction on the Kelly logging road (see map above). This hut is available for overnight stays but must be reserved on-line (see “Kelly Mountain Hut Reservations” on IF Ski Club home page). The hut has four cots (one with a good pad) and room for a couple others on the floor, some tables and chairs, a propane Coleman stove and two lanterns, dishes and utensils, a large pot for melting snow (please keep clean), and a wood heat stove. Bring your own cooking pots, food, one or two small green propane bottles, lots of warm clothes, insulating pads, and good sleeping bags! There should be a few extra propane cylinders in a crate. There is an outside toilet available. Please help keep these structures clean and in good repair and please pack out all trash! Please turn off all propane appliances, clean the hut, and zipper the door closed when leaving!
For overnight use, please park in the area designated by Kelly Canyon Ski Resort for nordic skiers/non-resort users (immediately before lower parking lot). According to the USFS, if you are traveling up FR 218 to any of our huts and NOT using any of the Kelly resort’s groomed (“shred”) trails, you are a “non-resort” user and only need to pay $5/vehicle to park. If you use Kelly’s shred trails, resort facilities, or park in their main parking lot, you will need to pay $5/person/day at the ticket booth. If you want to do this, just park in the main lot.
